Dr. Amir Hadanny, a certified neurosurgeon and hyperbaric and diving physician, is a leading researcher at the Sagol Center for hyperbaric medicine and research, Assaf-Harofeh medical center, Israel. Dr. Hadanny PhD thesis being done on the clinical applications of machine learning algorithms on medical data including the ability to predict HBOT outcome in post-concussion patients using the baseline brain imaging.
Dr. Hadanny research focus is on brain injuries, neuro-rehabilitation, and aging physiology. The work done by Dr. Hadanny combine applied research on humans’ side by side with animal models for further understating of physiological and pathophysiological processes.

Ole Hyldegaard is medical director and consultant anesthetist at the Hyperbaric Unit at the University Hospital at Rigshospitalet Copenhagen at the department of Anesthesia- and Surgery, Center of Head- and orthopedics. He is associate clinical research professor at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen. He is a Ph.D and DMSci in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine and government approved Diving- and Hyperbaric Physician. He has authored, and co-authored 55 peer-reviewed publications, thesis’s, and book chapters on diving physiology, decompression sickness and hyperbaric medicine. He is president of the EUBS.

Dr. Arieli obtained his Ph.D. from Tel-Aviv University, completing a post-doctorate at Buffalo, The State University of New York. He lectured in respiration physiology at the Technion Faculty of Medicine in Haifa. His main topics of research are respiratory physiology, oxygen toxicity, and decompression physiology. Dr. Arieli has investigated the environmental factors which affect oxygen toxicity, proposing algorithms for the prediction of pulmonary and central nervous system oxygen toxicity. In the research of decompression physiology, Dr. Arieli has presented a new mechanism underlying bubble formation on decompression. Dr. Arieli has published 114 research papers, and continues to pursue his research at the Israel Naval Medical Institute in Haifa and the Western Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Israel.

Prof. Shai Efrati is a faculty member at Sackler School of Medicine and the Sagol School of Neuroscience at Tel Aviv University. Additionally, he is the Chief Medical Director of the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research, at Assaf-Harofeh Medical Center, Israel. By combining both expertise Prof. Efrati initiated a research program focusing on the biological effects of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) on brain neuroplasticity (regeneration of damage brain tissue). In the first clinical studies it was demonstrated that HBOT can induce neuroplasticity among post Stroke patients and Traumatic Brain Injuries even years after the acute Insult. The important clinical results have led to fruitful ongoing cooperations, including multidiscipline teams focusing on the regenerative effects of hyperbaric oxygen on various types of brain injuries and pain syndromes.
Today, the Sagol center, under Prof. Efrati management, is one of the largest hyperbaric centers worldwide, treating more than 200 patients per day.
Prof. Efrati is also the Research & Development Medical Director of Assaf-Harofeh Medical Center, in affiliation with Tel-Aviv University.

Present Research Interests
Deep diving of humans (deeper than 100 m) is associated with short term, usually reversible, pressure related cognitive, sensory, autonomic nervous system deficiencies, and motor decrements culminating in convulsions and seizures, all termed High Pressure Neurological Syndrome (HPNS). We study helium (hydrostatic) pressure up to 10.1 MPa modulation of action potential properties, synaptic activity, neuronal excitability, and network function (reflexes, rhythmic and respiratory activity) in several invertebrate neuromuscular synapse models, frog peripheral neuromuscular system, various rodents brain slices, and isolated rat medulla and spinal cord preparations. On a molecular level we study pressure response of various proteins such as Ca2+ channels and NMDA receptors expressed in frog oocytes. We use computer neuronal simulations, bioinformatics, mathematical, and physical modeling as well as Molecular Dynamics simulations in interpreting the results. We aim at eliminating HPNS symptoms and gaining insight into deep diving physiology. We hope to enable humans’ exploration and exploitation of deep oceans’ resources.
